ACC is based at Minzu University, which offers unique opportunities for ACC students to interact with Chinese students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Compared to programs such as HBA or PIB, ACC students come from a larger number of universities and may be a good fit for Light Fellows looking to escape the “Yale bubble”.
ACC encourages and creates opportunities for students to interact with and build relationships with local Chinese people, including through a student buddy program and host family pairings. Language classes are intensive and highly structured. All students must abide by a strict full-time language pledge.
All term-time ACC students must choose an independent research topic and perform research, including interviewing local people, reading original sources in Chinese, writing a final paper on the topic, preparing an oral defense, and presenting the topic to the local community.
Program Application Notes: ACC accepts the Light Fellowship Language Evaluation as a substitute for one letter of recommendation from a language instructor. Please list acchina@hamilton.edu as the Recommender Email Address in the ACC application.
