The Greenberg Scholars
Through the Light Fellowship Program since 2006, a number of awardees for Chinese language study have been named "Greenberg Scholars" each year. These scholarships are made possible through the generosity of Maurice R. ("Hank") Greenberg, who established the Greenberg Scholars as part of the Greenberg Yale-China Initiative (see below). Together, joint funding from the Richard U. Light Foundation and from Mr. Greenberg combine to extend Yale's vast network of global ties.
Maurice R. "Hank" Greenberg
Mr. Greenberg is the chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr & Co., Inc. and the retired chairman and CEO of American International Group, Inc. (AIG). He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and in the Korean conflict, earning a rank of Captain and receiving the Bronze Star. Mr. Greenberg is former chairman and a current trustee of the Asia Society; founding chairman of the U.S.-Philippine Business Committee; vice chairman of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council; chairman of the U.S.-Korea Business Council; member of the U.S.-China Business Council and the Business Roundtable; and past chairman, deputy chairman and director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Among his numerous civic and charitable engagements, Mr. Greenberg is chairman emeritus of New York Hospital. He chairs The Starr Foundation, which provides financial support to academic, medical, cultural, and public policy institutions.
The Maurice R. Greenberg Yale-China Initiative
Mr. Greenberg has been instrumental in advancing three major aspects of Yale’s international outreach in China and around the world. Many students visiting the U.S. and China are now funded as Greenberg Scholars, allowing the University to meet their financial needs fully. Support of the World Fellows Program brings emerging leaders from China and other countries to Yale each year for seminars, research, and leadership training. The construction of a conference facility, The Maurice R. Greenberg Conference Center, has enhanced Yale’s ability to collaborate with leading Chinese universities and institutions.
The Greenberg Scholars program is the undergraduate cornerstone of the Greenberg Yale-China Initiative, providing financial support to send Yale students to China as well as supporting Chinese students to study at Yale. The program plays a key role in Yale’s mission to foster mutual understanding and deeper appreciation for the distinct elements of Chinese and Western cultures.
