Fall, Spring, Academic Year 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th

Middlebury in Japan is located in the Mikata neighborhood, around 30 minutes west of Tokyo via train. The program is hosted at International Christian University and it's location outside of the city center means that students are able to enjoy living in a campus environment while having access to the international metropolis of Tokyo. The program is set up in a way to help students integrate into the local community - the academic curriculum has a community engagement (and internship for Spring term students) component and another required course that focuses on Japanese Culture. Students attending Middlebury in Japan for the full academic year have the option to live in the local university dorm, which brings a whole level of immersion that other programs cannot match. Students studying for a single term are housed in the international dorm but there are also limited home-stay options available.

Program Application Notes:

  • All students are expected to enroll in a language course the semester prior to going abroad.
  • Middlebury in Japan accepts the Light Fellowship Language Evaluation as a substitute for the Middlebury application’s language assessment. However, students will still need to have the "Reference Form for Exchange/Invitee Program," the letter for the ICU application, completed separately.
  • Enter Kripa Bhagat's e-mail (kripa.bhagat@yale.edu) under "Study Abroad Adviser Recommendation"
