Career Strategy Fellowships Study Abroad Summer Session

SNU: Language Education Institute

You are here

Seoul National University: Seoul, South Korea

Program Highlights

An excellent program run by one of Korea’s top universities. Strong on teaching grammar, reading, and advanced elements of Korean language. SNU has typically been reviewed most favorably by advanced and heritage learners who have a solid foundation of spoken Korean. Most students live off campus, which is quiet and green, on the edge of downtown Seoul.

Strong emphasis on high level reading and writing. Not centrally located in Seoul (think: cleaner air and exercise!). Most students find and rent their own off-campus housing.

SNU has worked with the Light Fellowship to offer a supplemental Buddy Program, specifically for Light Fellows. It includes 26 hours of one-on-one time with a local SNU student who can help with formal assignments/studying/exam prep, or simply spend time together on casual outings.

As the Light Fellowship staff emphasizes as well, I think it’s super important to explore the country outside of the classroom. The amount of language you retain depends on what you make of the program, and you can never improve a language just by interacting with book. Every weekend, I explored somewhere and did something new, whether it was night sight-seeing at the Han River, watching a Korean movie, visiting the zoo, singing Korean songs at a noraebang (karaoke), or eating exotic food at the Noryangjin fish market, and utilized the Korean I learned in the classroom."
